Added Chile to the Map

I've added popular baby names from Chile to the Baby Name Map, going back to 1990. The most popular boys' name last year was Benjamin and the most popular girls' name was Constanza. I hope to add more countries from South America to increase the map's worldwide coverage.

Browser search plugins

For users of Firefox 2 or Internet Explorer 7, I've integrated the Baby Name Map with the search-box in the top right of each browser window as shown in the image above.

You can add a search for popular boys or girls names to your browser. Typing a name and hitting the Enter key will quickly show the popularity of that name around the world.

In Firefox, the search box will auto-complete. Just type the first few letters of the name and you'll see a list of suggested names.

New York city, Spain, and Norway added

The Baby Name Map gained recent statistics for New York city from 2002 through 2006 as shown on the right.

As well, thanks to Juan Carlos Bermudez from Spain for pointing me to statistics for his country, now available on the map. The top names in Spain last year were Alejandro and Lucia.

A big thanks to Carl-Christian Salvesen for providing links to statistics in Norway. The most popular names there last year were Jonas and Thea.

Great work, please keep the submissions coming! If you know of a source of popular baby name statistics from your local government's Vital Statistics agency, please drop me a line.

LifeHacker article

A big thanks to Gina Trapani at LifeHacker for mentioning the Baby Name Map. The site took a pounding in the morning as thousands of visitors checked out the map. I had to quickly implement some improved caching to let the site keep pace with all the visitors.

The top 100 baby names in New Zealand since 2001 and all the baby names given in Belgium since 2001 have been added to the map.

As well, the top 100 baby names in Denmark since 1996 have been added. Thanks very much to Soren Johannessen and Jon Ronnenberg for sending me the link to the statistics and translating. My Danish is pretty weak. :)
